People believe that the art of plastic and aesthetic surgery is based on a surgeon’s hand-eye coordination; in other words, technical aptitude.
It has very little to do with their hands in actuality. Most operations are influenced more by planning and decision-making than by what the hands can accomplish — I’d guess over three-quarters of the time brain, and less than one-quarter of the time hands.
Some surgeons like to think of themselves as artists, which is wonderful, but I can guarantee you that artistic ability does not equate to excellent surgical outcomes. An eye for beauty or fashion, on the other hand, is useful, but it’s all in the mind.
The importance of exercising your intellect includes knowledge, creativity, and insight. Knowledge is essential since knowing what we can’t do is just as important as knowing what we can. When the difficulties we encounter are unique, or when the old answers aren’t working, we need to be creative. It’s just as critical, if not more important, to have the wisdom to know which operations to avoid.
One of my personal favorite quotations is, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” A patient will not be satisfied if a perfectly executed poor option is used.
